Q&A with

Tyler Kwak

What inspired you to join iBuildBridges?

I’m mostly a solo street performer, so this is a cool way to play music with other people!

What‘s something unique you contribute to the group?

I have perfect pitch – the ability to hear a note and name it as instantly as naming a color. I can also play a lot of video game soundtracks.

What are your musical influences?

Lindsey Stirling, and my past orchestra teachers.

What impact has iBuildBridges had on you as a musician and person?

It's a lot of fun exploring different places to perform that I would not normally go to. Thanks to IBuildBridges, I visited Chicago for the first time. I was one of the first to join in the fall of 2018, and the only original member from that time. I will stay in this group for as long as humanly possible!

Why is music important to you?

It's my life. It's my escape. It shows that I have a purpose in life.

How do you spend your time outside of iBuildBridges?

Street performing in the Seattle Center and speed-running Super Mario 64 (trying to beat the game as fast as possible). Super Mario 64 was a big part of my childhood. One of my favorite songs to perform is Super Mario 64 staff roll end credits. I love creating a sense of nostalgia for people who used to play the game.

I know there are so many problems going on in the world with politics and race and everything, but when you sit down and really talk to one another and share your hobbies, your favorite musicians, genres, video games, TV shows, anything like that, you'd be surprised how quickly you can be united.
