Q&A with

Ayana Freeman

What inspired you to join iBuildBridges?

I appreciate that iBuildBridges focuses on creating music that is empowering and uplifting, music that speaks the truth of the injustices happening in our communities and our world.

What's something unique you contribute to the group?

I am a black Christian woman. I bring my stories, my values, and my voice to iBuildBridges in hopes that people will listen.

What are your musical influences?

I am influenced by music from around the world and across different eras, ranging from Aboriginal melodies to today’s Top 40. I enjoy listening to music outside of what I heard growing up, but I also appreciate the gospel and R&B songs of my childhood.

What's your favorite iBuildBridges ensemble piece to perform, and why?

I like performing Hineh Ma Tov. I like the harmonies we sing and how the song starts out calm and reflective, as if the words are sung in reverence, then gradually builds in tempo, volume, and energy.

What has being part of iBuildBridges meant to you?

I enjoy the camaraderie that has come from being a part of this group. I enjoy seeing everyone and I appreciate what they bring to the mix. Yes, they are all talented musicians, but more importantly, I appreciate their personalities, their perspectives, their identities, their stories, and who they are as people.

Why is music important to you?

What would life be without music? The song of birds? The whistle of wind? The crash of waves? The drum of rain? Music contributes to a life well lived.

How do you spend your time outside of iBuildBridges?

I go on walks, cook, sing in the choir at Christ the King Bible Fellowship, and spend time with my family. I also perform at The Roadhouse, Events by Elevate, and at other community events. I try to spend time reflecting on how I can make life better for myself and others.

If I could change the world, I would inspire people to be kind, to explore outside of their comfort zones, and to embrace differences.
